Hello Paula, welcome to BrandEducation! Where do you find inspiration for your books?
My inspiration for my books comes from all sorts of places, but a lot of it is rooted in my childhood, things I loved, challenges I went through, and moments that stuck with me. I take those memories and mix them with a bit of creativity to create stories that kids today can connect with
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, you can usually find me cozy in my corner of the couch (my go-to spot), watching 80’s movies and TV shows with a big cup of coffee in my author mug. I also love watching football with my husband and sons, reading children’s books, and vibing to my hip hop playlist.
How do you balance the need for commercial success with your artistic integrity as a writer?
Balancing commercial success with artistic integrity can be tricky, but for me, it’s all about staying true to the heart of my stories. I always want to create something that resonates with kids and makes an impact, while also keeping in mind what will connect with a broader audience. At the end of the day, I try to find a sweet spot where my creativity can shine, but my stories still reach the readers they’re meant for.
How do you handle writer’s block or periods of low motivation?
When I hit writer’s block or feel a dip in motivation, I just step away for a bit to regroup. Taking a break and coming back with fresh eyes has always worked for me.
What advice do you have for aspiring authors who are looking to get their first book published?
My advice for aspiring authors is don’t let the idea of not getting traditionally published stop you. Self-publishing is always an option, and it’s a great way to get your book out into the world. No matter which route you choose, it’s not going to be easy, but trust me, it’s worth it in the end.
Do you have any upcoming projects or future writing plans?
I recently released the third book in my Peyton’s Journeys series. In February, I’m excited to introduce a brand-new children’s book with all-new characters. Then in May, the fourth book in the series will be coming out. That’s what’s on the calendar for now, but you never know what else might pop up!
In your opinion, what is the most challenging aspect of writing, and how do you overcome it?
The most challenging aspect of writing has nothing to do with the writing itself. For me, it’s the marketing side. When I published my first book, I had no idea how big of a role marketing would play in its journey. It’s been a learning process, but it’s such an important part of reaching readers.
What role do you believe literature plays in shaping society and culture?
I think literature plays a huge role in shaping society and culture. Books have the power to open minds, spark conversations, and bring people together by sharing different perspectives. They can challenge the way we see the world or help us feel seen and understood. Stories, especially for kids, shape how we think, dream, and relate to others, so it’s important to keep putting diverse and meaningful stories out there.
What themes or messages do you hope readers will take away from your work?
The themes I hope little readers—and even parents—take away from my work are to always follow your dreams, be yourself, and don’t let fear stop you, even when you’re scared. I want them to feel inspired to go after what they want with confidence.
How do you develop your characters? Do you draw inspiration from real people or experiences?
I develop my characters by drawing inspiration from people in my life. Peyton is actually inspired by me as a little girl, and her best friends in the book are based on my two closest friends. I take their personalities and use them as a foundation to create unique characters that feel real.
