Throughout our conversation, we delved into topics of positivity, family dynamics, the intricacies of marriage, and the importance of embracing diversity.

Hello Duke, welcome to BrandEducation! Can you tell us about your latest book and what inspired you to write it?

My latest book, “100 Lessons For A Successful Interracial/Interpersonal Relationship” was inspired by past relationships. I wanted to help others navigate the challenges of relationships by creating a practical Self- Help Guide for all.

How do you approach the process of writing? Do you have a specific routine or ritual?

My approach is research, learning and development. Research allows me to learn more than I already know, which helps me develop the characters I create. I’m most creative early in the morning. Feeling like I’m making a sacrifice helps my creative process.

Many authors have a favorite place or environment where they prefer to write. Where do you find you are most creative and why?

I have an office in my home with books and literature. I have a favorite chair that’s my go to when I need that extra spark. I’m most creative when I don’t have to worry about interruptions. If I have three hours of uninterrupted time my creativity will begin to flow.

How do you develop your characters? Do you draw inspiration from real people or experiences?

I develop characters by research and real life people and situations. I like to feel like I’m living the life of the characters as much as I can. Yes I draw inspiration from family, friends, friends of friends, situations and experiences. When I have certain dreams or visions, I try to write them down immediately.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing? Any hobbies or interests that influence your writing?

Hanging out and playing with my kids. I Love Golf and Tennis. I Love reading anything I can get my hands on. Meditation influences my writing. I admire James Baldwin, Napoleon Hill and Ernest Hemingway.

Can you discuss the role of research in your writing? How do you ensure accuracy in your work?

Research is the key! Research helps me create a work or story that I’m confident to share. Writing without research isn’t allowed! You must know and live the project. Accuracy comes from the research. I ensure this by looking for several different perspectives before I develop.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors who are looking to get their first book published?

Be patient! Be willing to suffer! Don’t take the first deal! Have several people read the contract! It’s better to self-publish if your vision isn’t being met by a traditional publisher. Build a name and fan base, find a good literary agent. Don’t sell out to get a traditional publishing deal!

Do you have any upcoming projects or future writing plans that you’d like to share with your readers?

Yes, “100 Lessons For A Successful Interracial” is being translated into several different languages, starting with Hindi by Genius Words. Upcoming projects include my children’s book “London visits London” a Memoir “Fear Led Me To Faith” as well as my novel book series, “Lake Michigan Mysteries” We’re currently working on a play, screenplay and an audiobook.

How has your writing evolved or changed over the course of your career?

I’m the living example of the evolution of a writer. My dedication to the craft has led me to take different courses and learn from experts. I realized that I could only grow as a writer if I was willing to be teachable and learn from some of the best. Find a great author that you admire and reach out to them. Ask and you shall receive, it worked for me! You have to be willing to pay for your tutelage.

How do you handle writer’s block or periods of low motivation?

By being alone! Meditating! I try to figure out why the block is happening? Usually I find the answers in a quiet space alone without distractions. It helps. Sit, relax, think and meditate. All writers and authors experience writer’s block!

What role do you believe literature plays in shaping society and culture? How do you see your own work contributing to this?

Literature helps us understand the good and bad in society. Writers give different insights and interpretations that help shape society and culture. My book “100 Lessons For A Successful Interracial/Interpersonal Relationship” contributes by influencing
