Hello Cathy, Welcome to Brand.Education! Tell me about yourself?
I am a passionate woman 58 years young. Lover of nature, blissfully married for over 30 years! My working title is Cathy Crawly Laughing Bean Queen.
Where are you from?
Bradford, Ontario Canada (north of Toronto)
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoyed gardening, cycling, singing, dancing and laughing
Can you tell us a little bit about your journey?
I worked as a Secretary for about 20 years in a variety of companies. Graduated with Psychology degree in 2000, worked with special needs folks. Started Cathy’s Crawly Composters 2002 which bloomed into Cathy’s Sprouters and now Cathy’s Laughter Club. Ha ha #fun
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Compassionate, Genuine, Curious
What inspires you?
I am inspired by nature and good deeds.
Can you explain to us what vermicomposting is and what you do?
Vermicomposting is simply composting with worms. It can be done indoors offering a wonderful solution for anyone living in a small space (eg. Condo, townhouse, van). Worms convert food scraps and paper into nature’s finest fertilizer. Grow more nutrient rich food. Composting closes the loop in food production.
How did you discover or come across vermicomposting?
In 2002, the landfill for the Greater Toronto area closed and we started shipping garbage to the United States. Toronto has about 6 million people, half living in condos or small spaces without an outdoor area to do composting. Worm composting is a perfect solution.
Can you tell us about Cathy’s Crawly Composters and what role you have within?
I am a Worm Advocate and Founder of Cathy’s Crawly Composters (est 2002). I am on a mission to put worms in every living space. Indoor composting with worms. I believe worms are going to play an ever increasing role in waste management, soil production and therefore food security. It is essential that we learn how. Food waste is a simple way that we can mitigate climate change and create ‘black gold’ to grow more delicious, nutritious food. A worm composter offers a tremendous learning opportunity for all ages.
You also do laughter yoga; can you tell us a little about this?
Laughter yoga is intentional laughter exercises designed to make us feel better. Started in 1995 by a medical doctor in India, Dr. Madan Kataria. There are laughter clubs around the world.
Laughter yoga came to me at the perfect time. You can imagine that not everyone wants to have worms in the house. Daily laughter is now a huge part of my health plan. Laughter is a great connector. It oxygenates our beautiful body. When we laugh, we release the love chemicals. Have you had your daily D.O.S.E.? (dopamin, seratonin, oxytocin, endorphins). Laughter is a wonderful form of self love.
