Patrick Greenwood, after military service, embarked on a 25-year career in the information technology field, working in various roles in sales, engineering, support, and design. His inspiration for writing came from his business travels to places like Vietnam, China, Japan, Taiwan, and Portugal. A true believer in listening to one’s passion, Patrick began writing in early 2020 based on several trips he made while cycling in various countries. When Patrick isn’t writing his next novel, ghostwriting for cybersecurity companies, or writing blogs, he hosts the award-winning podcast, “Writers on Writers over a triple espresso.” The podcast broadcasts live on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 am PST.
Hello Patrick, welcome to BrandEducation! Where do you find inspiration for your books?
Being around people in various places. Seeing the good in the world along with the bad and see how people come together to solve their problems.
What themes and or messages do you hope readers will take away from your work?
Live life, first. Avoid regret by doing something and not just think or wish. Be kind to each other.
Do you have a favorite character from your own books? If so, who it it and why?
Regina Kendall – decorated Coast Guard Officer, global lawyer, a total badass! Regina’s toughness, smarts, and ability to do the impossible makes her a strong, powerful, yet attractive character in both “Forever our Sunrise in Saigon” and “Shores of Okinawa.” I have big plans for her character in the next novels!
What role do you believe literature plays in shaping society and culture?
I truly believe literature continues to have the power to change people’s attitudes through enlightenment, strength in overcoming challenges, and allowing people to take a time out from life to enjoy an adventure.
What challenges have you faced as a writer, and how have you overcome them?
I have been dyslexic since I was a child. I never really overcame this challenge even as an adult. Becoming a writer I hope serves as a testimonial for authors with similar challenges that they can overcome and become anything they want!
How do you choose the titles for your book?
Each title “Forever our Sunrise in Saigon” and “Shores of Okinawa” have a great deal to do with the story itself. I name the books as a teaser for the story 😊
How do you balance the need for commercial success with your artistic integrity as a writer?
I prefer to be viewed as a good writer and that is my measurement stick. I don’t look so much at the commercial success. I love writing and I hope the readers enjoy the work. That is empowers me to write more!!
How has your writing evolved or changed over the course of your career?
I believe the more I writer, the better I become. One of the greatest improvements in my writing is my ability to edit my own work! That alone has been a huge improvement.
What are your thoughts on the future of publishing and the role of technology in storytelling.
Artificial intelligence has a role for sure regarding publishing. Authors that leverage AI for plagiarism checking, research, and grammar will continue to see more benefits from this amazing technology. Authors that choose to use AI to write their content will become very disappointed with the outcome. Authenticity should be what every writer strives for.
Can you share some insight into your creative process?
Yes, take time enjoy walks in the park, along with ocean, and even at the mall! Capturing the world around us and taking the time just observe life provides so much material to create content.
